Generalized Anxiety Disorder Course

Course Information

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is the most common anxiety disorder. It is typified by months or years of excessive worry over everyday things, and the worry eventually wears people out. Some people have their first episode as a teenager, but most begin around 30, and continue this pattern of chronic worry for many years. Medications can help but do not prevent relapse. Internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy produces more improvement than medications, with no side effects, and there is less chance of relapse.

Who will find this course useful?

Chronic worriers will benefit most from this course, providing their worry is not focussed on one thing only, and is not associated with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and drug or alcohol dependence.

Course duration

This course is self paced, but is designed to be completed within 3 months, at most. It is best to do one lesson every week or two to allow time to practice between lessons. The system won’t allow less than 5 or more than 25 days between lessons. Most people take 10-12 weeks to complete the course. Initially you will be granted 90 days access, and upon completion of the course, you will be granted an extra 12 months access for practice purposes.

How much will it cost?

Depending on the method of delivery, the course will be either A$59 or A$59.99 for three months access. That’s a whole course for less than the cost of one visit to a psychologist. It’s a small price to pay for ‘getting back up’.

What type of support will I receive?

The amount of support you receive will depend on the way you choose to do this course. If your clinician – doctor or psychologist – prescribes it, they will comment one to five times on your progress. If you do the self-help or phone app courses, there is no external support available, as these delivery methods are designed to enhance motivation and self-reliance. However, provided you complete all six lessons, the results will be as good as with supervision.

What is Worry
Anxiety is typified by excessive worry. Worry is excessive when it is too intense, happens too often, or takes up more time than is warranted by the realistic importance of the event, or the actual likelihood of the event occurring.

Depression And Anxiety?
Anxiety and depression often occur together. Anxiety is typified by months or years of excessive worry over everyday things, and depression is typified by recurring periods of sadness, loss of interest, poor concentration and feelings of worthlessness.
If you feel like you are suffering from both anxiety and depression, the Mixed Anxiety and Depression Course may be more suitable for you.

How is the course structured?

Online Questionnaires

Our online questionnaires help to establish how you are feeling. Results from the questionnaires are then relayed back to your clinician after each lesson. If you are undertaking a self-guided course, you will be notified by THIS WAY UP if your scores are above the acceptable range.

Comic-Based Stories

Our lessons are in a comic based format, where you can follow the journey of a character as they learn practical skills to combat anxiety. They also learn how to maintain these skills, manage and reduce difficulties, and prevent symptoms from returning.

Download our summaries and activities to reinforce what you learnt in each lesson.

Extra Resources

Download additional activities and information that you can complete between lessons.

Recovery Stories

Read real life stories about how others overcame their anxiety.

Trial Results

We have done two Randomised Controlled Trials and the results have been replicated by independent scientists. We have also completed a large study of effectiveness in practice. The outcomes are very good, as reported above.

” Thanks to this program, I have finally made time for myself, and am so pleased to have a clearer understanding of me.
I am still learning to let go of some of the control, but I have made massive steps and am confident to talk about my anxiety.
I am proud of myself, and I am confident I will continue with my awareness, learning, and belief in myself.
Thanks. ”

Patient feedback after Lesson 6

“I was surprised how simple the homework was from week 1. I thought to myself, “Just deep breathing and exercise? What will that help?”
Well, I have been amazed how much these two things have helped me. Exercise has been great at using up some of my extra adrenaline, and the breathing has been fantastic in helping me relax.
I find myself doing deep breathing regularly throughout the day, and it keeps me from panic and helps me sleep at night too.”

Patient feedback after Lesson 2

“This course was an important stepping stone in curing my anxiety.
I have been able to identify that I have a problem, I have learned steps to decrease the anxiety, and hopefully I can get rid of it completely in time.
I know the course isn’t a quick fix, and I will have to revise my homework to ensure I have the skills to keep on track.
This course was convenient as I could always find time to do each lesson.”

Patient feedback after Lesson 6

“I have always known I am an anxious person, but lesson 1 helped me see the links between my worries, my symptoms, and my behaviours.
I became aware of avoidance in my life, and was able to put a name to “anticipatory” anxiety, which has prevented me from achieving successes in my life.
I found the information in lesson 1 to be the best explanation of anxiety that I’ve seen.”

Patient feedback after Lesson 1

I found each of the lessons helpful in their own right. The lessons about tackling negative thoughts, to relaxed breathing, to a relapse prevention plan were all very helpful to read and know about. To know that you’re not going crazy, and that other people are tackling the same things really grounds you, and bring you back to earth. A big thank you to THIS WAY UP
